When I got up this morning the sky was overcast. I should have known right there and then that there might be a touch of weather as part of today’s adventure. I had decided that rather than simply staying on the TCH from Clarenville to St John’s I would instead use the daylight hours more wisely and ride up Hwy 80 on the Trinity Bay shoreline side all the way to Bay Verde
and return on Hwy 70 on the Conception Bay side of the peninsula. I was told by my friendly waitress in Old Perligan
that the view at the end of the road was well worth the extra half hour of driving; which was probably true if the place had not been socked in by fog.
In any event this route allowed me to see Heart’s Delight,
a nice harbour some 40 kilometres or so north of Dildo.
À propos the role that the weather played as I mentioned earlier, today’s menu included dense fog, thick mist, and at times heavy rainfall with some pretty strong winds. The combination can be a bit stressful at times and. I was grateful that at one point south of Carbonear in some heavy rain a guy in a pickup truck stayed well behind me and ran interference for me with other traffic as I rode well below the posted 100km speed limit.
I made it to my hotel in St Johns and later went out for dinner. I had a selection of Atlantic provinces oysters at one followed by calamari at a different restaurant; both were excellent dishes as were the two glasses of Chardonnay.
I think tomorrow will be a down day to walk around downtown St John’s that has changed dramatically since I was last here.
