Well, this post is about a temporary sign that I saw often as I rode a number of secondary highways.
It’s not so much the message that is straightforward enough; watch out there is danger ahead! Because there are a fair few potholes in the roads I was often left wondering why a warning sign back there and not here? Here’s what I think may be happening. I suspect that there is a division of the Highway Department whose sole mandate is to warn drivers against the dangers of potholes. I envision crews leaving the Caution Potholes Ahead sign depot each morning with a full load of signs and orders that they, at their discretion, are to leave a sign alongside roads where the dreaded potholes are deemed to be important enough to be singled out.
I’m not sure how long one of these temporary signs is left at a particular location. Reason would suggest that since there are more potholes than one thinks there could ever be signs, the only sensible approach is for crews to move the signs to different locations on a regular basis. Of note, though I did see some evidence that some holes had been patched I did not see a single pothole repair crew; I suspect they were all busy installing or moving around the Caution Potholes Ahead signs. Keep up the good work!
Actually I am pleased to report that based on my travels the roads in Newfoundland were generally in good condition, and though I saw and avoided many potholes I only saw one moose in a ditch alongside Hwy 1.
