A detour on the way to Port aux Basques

Today I am going to take you along for a bit of the ride out of Corner Brook. I hope you enjoy yourself.

The rain that fell overnight has ended, it’s 18 degrees and the sky is clear. It should be a great day for riding on the TCH. We’re cruising along at just (a little more than just) over the 100 KPH speed limit when a bit of fog appears; so what, no problem.

A few kilometres later the bit has changed to more, and soon quite a bit more; small drops of fine mist begin to accumulate on the windscreen and on my helmet’s visor. Soon both are covered, and it’s feeling distinctly cooler; but there’s still nothing to be concerned about.

A short while later I am cutting my way through a thick cloud of wet and I’ve entered a stretch of newly paved highway, so new in fact that the permanent lane markings have yet to be painted on the blacktop. At this point, after having shifted down a few gears and shed some speed I am concentrating on staying in my lane and wondering where I might be able to safely stop to put on my rain gear.

And then I am able to make out a sign announcing the exit for the highway to Stephenville and Cape Saint George, the interesting looking detour I had planned to include in today’s journey. No sooner am I on this highway that the fog disappears and the sun emerges. As the temperature rises I am able to continue my ride around the amazing Port-au-Port Peninsula.

Just another day in this beautifully remarkable province. Now wasn’t that fun and wasn’t it worth it to get to see some beautiful coastal scenery?

Like

the beach at Port-au Port where it is believed that Jacques Cartier landed in 1534,

a small bird on a house on the beach in Mainland

and finally a ridge of high and steep rocky outcrops not too far from Port-aux-Basques.

Tomorrow I leave “The Rock” my mind filled with more wonderful memories.
