Sudbury to Wawa

I have now covered 1,065 km’s since I left home Saturday morning. The visits with my brothers Gilles and Jean-Yves were great. It was an opportunity for us to catch up on family news and spend some quality time together.

I made a short visit to my first university alma mater Université Laurentienne in Sudbury. While I took most of my undergraduate classes at Laurentian, my degree was actually granted by l’Université de Sudbury, one of the four affiliated universities.

The temperature today was a pleasant 17 to 24 degrees, the traffic was light and there was essentially no roadwork on Highway 17 from Sudbury to Wawa. However the smoke from forest fires in Ontario and Western Canada was visible and effected the air quality along the whole route.

There always seems to be something new and interesting to discover along the way. For example today I found this official-looking current weather explanation display at the trading post at Pancake Bay.

Lake Superior, seen here from Alona Bay, is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and the third largest in volumes; a big enough pool for a family of ducks to paddle in.

I arrived in Wawa late this afternoon. I think I have done more overnight stays during different motorcycle trips in this small community than anywhere else. I guess I just can’t get enough of giant geese, including this one located at the entrance of the town, just off Hwy 17.

I am hoping to get off early tomorrow morning to continue the top of Lake Superior route to Thunder Bay.
