While I like the riding from new place to new place, it’s nice to be able to stay n one spot for a day. I did that today in Roswell New Mexico and was able to take in three attractions. The first which was free and that I visited before lunch, which meant I had the place virtually to myself, was the Contemporary Art Museum that was founded by a wealthy oil tycoon, Donald B. Anderson who was himself a gifted painter who lived to be over 100 years old and some of whose works exposed here. He started an artist-in-residence program through which 6 artists from anywhere in the world would be invited to come to Roswell for a year with all of their expenses paid. These gifted artists produced remarkable pieces, some of which are presented in the various galleries that make up the ever-growing collection exhibited in this beautiful museum. Here are few of the paintings by the founder.
And a few pieces by one or the residents.
The next three pictures are of a painting of a dancer sitting in a corner. The work is on a triangular canvas that is resting on the floor and leaning in a corner. The eyes of the subject face the viewer regardless of whether the painting is viewed from full on or from either side. I spent some time moving from side to side and I swear that her gaze followed me.
After lunch I walked to the Roswell Museum and Planetarium where there is an exhibit of the work of Robert H. Goddard, who is credited with creating and building the world’s first liquid-feuled rocket, much of the work having been done near Roswell.
And since one can’t possibly come to Roswell without going to the International UFO Museum and Research Center, to see and read all about “The 1947 Roswell UFO Incident”, and so I did. This is certainly the most popular attraction in Roswell.
